Easy Homemade Body, Face And Foot Scrub

Our parents really liked this gift we made.  It is very simple to make and good for feet, body and face.

You will need:

  • 1 cup of epsom saltimages-2

  • ¼ cup coconut oil (you may also use olive oil or almond oil)

  • 1 teaspoon liquid castille soap (you don't have to, but we had just made some)

  • 10-15 drops of essential oils (we like lavender and eucalyptus.  Here are other fun combinations: lavender/vanilla, orange/peppermint, and lemon/rosemary)

Mix all ingredients and add essential oils or scents until you like it.  Make a fun label for the jar and it is a good idea to write the recipe too to make it again.
Rub your feet, body and/or face and rinse after.

Easy Homemade Natural Mouthwash

We have been more careful about our oral health because of Danielle's early tooth cavities.  A mouthwash is something new for our family.  We have never used one.  I thought it is great to use in between meals and after a snack.  A quick rinse will be easier than the whole teeth brushing activity.  So, what goes into our mouths, especially under our tongue, goes straight to our bloodstream.  That is why we make ours with natural ingredients.

You will need:

1 cup of Hydrogen Peroxideimages-1

1 cup of filtered water

2 drops of peppermint essential oil

a few drops of liquid stevia

Very simple, just mix them all up and there you have it.  Destiny makes this for us.

How To Make Apple Cider Vinegar And It's Many Uses

Here we are with Destiny and Danielle making raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar.  This is so easy and costs you nothing.  Well, nothing you really have to buy.  When we eat apples, we save the cores in a bag in the refrigerator.  When we have enough, we make the vinegar.  Please get organic apples because they are heavily sprayed with harmful chemicals.

All you need is:

A glass jar

Apples (cores, peels, or whole apple)

water

coffee filter or napkin

rubber band

another glass jar for your finished cider

How to do it:

Simply let apple cores or peels brown a little by leaving them out for a short while.  Since we keep ours in the refrigerator, they are a little brown already.  imagePlace them all in the jar and fill the jar with filtered water.  Make sure there is a little room left at the top of the jar.

imageCover with napkin and fasten with rubber bank.  Leave it for about a month (longer if the weather is cold about 6 weeks).  After a month, drain the liquid into your other glass jar.  Congratulations, you've just made raw and unfiltered apple cider vinegar.

Apple Cider Vinegar is a must in any natural home.  It is anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-septic.  It kills 98% of all germs.

Some health benefits are:

What are the benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar?

* Rich in potassium, a mineral that is often times lacking in adult diets. This mineral is key for growth, building muscles, transmission of nerve impulses, heart activity etc. It also helps to prevent brittle teeth, hair loss and runny noses.

* Rich in acetic acid. This acid is said to slow the digestion of starch which can help to lower the rise in glucose that commonly occurs after meals.

* Rich in ash which gives Apple Cider Vinegar its alkaline property. This aids your body in maintaining proper pH levels for a healthy alkaline state. (It is particularly important if you drink a lot of coffee or wine.)

* It can help regulate blood pressure and reduce bad cholesterol.

* Rich in malic acid which gives ACV its anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

* May help improve bowel irregularity and helps to remove toxins from the body at a faster rate.

* It can help clear up skin conditions and blemishes.

* Apple Cider Vinegar helps with weight loss by breaking down fats so that your body can use them rather than store them.

These are just a few of it's many wonderful uses:ACV-dw7-602467

1. Reduces body fat, particularly that pesky abdominal fat, and triglycerides (the bad cholesterol).

2. Balance your pH levels to bust fatigue and keep your energy levels up.

3. Improve circulation.

4. Detoxify the liver and kidneys.

5. Break down mucus and cleanse the lymph nodes to heal allergy symptoms. Also gets rid of nasty side effects such as headaches, sore throats, and sinus infections.

6. Strengthen your stomach acid and prevent acid reflux and heartburn from junk food.

Helpful tip: Drink it with a straw to keep it away from the enamel on your teeth.

You can also incorporate apple cider vinegar into your beauty routine:

7. Increase the body and shine of your hair by running a cup of ACV through it after shampooing a few times a week. It’s great for removing build-up and restoring your hair to its natural state. Don’t worry – if you rinse well, you won’t smell like vinegar.

8. Fade age spots and kill acne by using apple cider vinegar as a skin toner. Dilute it a bit with some water, then soak a cotton ball in it and rub it all over your face before bed.

9. Treat warts or ringworm by soaking a cotton ball in ACV, placing it on the affected area, and securing it with a band aid. Leave it on overnight and repeat this until the wart dries up and falls off.

10. Heal a sunburn fast by adding adding a cup of ACV to warm bath water and soaking in it for 10-20 minutes. When I did this I rubbed coconut oil all over my sunburn after the bath and it worked wonders.

11. Whiten your teeth by brushing with ACV before brushing with toothpaste. Don’t do this often to avoid wearing away the enamel. (Admin Note: Use only Non-Fluoride Toothpaste – All Natural is best)

12. Relieve itchy mosquito bites by rubbing a cotton ball soaked with ACV over the affected area.

Clean your home and pets with apple cider vinegar:

13. Clean your toilet with apple cider vinegar by dumping a cup into the bowl, letting it sit overnight, scrubbing it clean in the morning, and flushing.

14. Create an all-purpose apple cider vinegar cleaner by adding half cup ACV and 1 cup water to a spray bottle. Use it to clean microwaves, kitchen counters, bath tiles, windows, mirrors, shower scum, and other non-porous surfaces. This is one of my go-to ways for quickly wiping down the bathroom. I also had a grand idea the other day for reusing a Clorox Disinfecting Wipes tube – add this solution to the empty tube, stuff some rags in there, and grab one when it’s time for a quick clean up. Much cheaper than the store-bought wipes.

15. Add a tablespoon or two to your dishwasher for extra clean and sparkly dishes. I don’t have a dishwasher, but when I soak my dishes before washing I add a little ACV to the mix to help break down food residue.

What Is Apple Cider Vinegar?

Vinegar is a product of fermentation. This is a process in which sugars in a food are broken down by bacteria and yeast. In the first stage of fermentation, the sugars are turned into alcohol. Then, if the alcohol ferments further, you get vinegar. The word comes from the French, meaning “sour wine.” While vinegar can be made from all sorts of things — like many fruits, vegetables, and grains — apple cider vinegar comes from pulverized apples.

The main ingredient of apple cider vinegar, or any vinegar, is acetic acid. However, vinegars also have other acids, vitamins, mineral salts, and amino acids.

34 Ways to Use Lemon Essential Oil: A Favorite In Our Home

I have been on the theme of "Lemon" here and we praise God for giving us this amazing fruit. This oil is one of my favorite because it is so versatile.  There are so many uses for it. Here are just a few ways you can use the essential oil as found in the Young Living Circle Blog.

Lemon oil can be used for everything from aromatherapy to flavoring water, to making your own uplifting bath salts to cleaning produce. Lemon oil has been widely used in skin care to cleanse skin and reduce wrinkles. It promotes clarity of thought and purpose, as well as health, healing, physical energy, and purification. Its fragrance is invigorating, enhancing, and warming. Lemon (Citrus limon) essential oil has antiseptic-like properties and contains compounds that have been studied for their effects on immune function. Lemon essential oil is cold-pressed from the rind.Lemon-Oil-12A 1995 Mie University study found that citrus fragrances boosted immunity, induced relaxation, and reduced depression.

Medical Properties of Lemon Essential Oil: Antitumoral, antiseptic, improves microcirculation, and immune stimulant (increases white blood cells), improves memory, relaxation. Rich in limonene, which has been extensively studied for its ability to combat tumor growth in over 50 clinical studies.

Jean Valnet MD estimated that it takes 3,000 lemons to produce one kilo of lemon essential oil – use it sparingly when flavoring beverages or foods. In his book, “The Practice of Aromatherapy”, Valnet wrote that lemon is a tonic for supporting the nervous and sympathetic nervous system.

University researchers in Japan found that diffusing certain aromas in an office environment dramatically improved mental accuracy and concentration. Diffused Lemon oil resulted in 54 percent fewer errors! Diffuse for 10 minutes every hour. When aromas were diffused during test taking, scores increased by as much as 50 percent.

34 Ways To Use Lemon Essential Oil**

  1. To clean non-carpeted floors, add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to a bucket of water. Then add 5 – 10 drops of lemon, pine, or spruce essential oil. If the floor is especially dirty, add several drops of dish washing soap. This will clean even the dirtiest floor.

  2. To make a carpet freshener, add 16 – 20 drops of essential oils to 1 cup of baking soda or borax powder. Mix ingredients together well and place in a covered container overnight so that the essential oil can be absorbed. Sprinkle over carpet then vacuum the powder up.

  3. You may also put 3-7 drops of Lemon essential oil on a cotton ball and place it into a vacuum bag – doing this scents the air while vacuuming. If your vacuum collects the dirt into water, simply add a few drops into the water reservoir before vacuuming. This refreshes both the carpet and acts as an air freshener.

  4. Some essential oils can act as gentle stimulants to the limbic system of the brain by their scent, increasing alertness and concentration enhancing the capacity for learning, improving memory, and assisting many other cognitive functions. A wide range of essential oils offer these benefits, such as: Lemon, Peppermint, Rosemary and Melissa. To help increase these functions simply inhale the chosen essential oil directly from the bottle or put a drop on a tissue and keep in your pocket for use throughout the day.

  5. Use 1–2 drops to remove gum, oil, grease, grease spots, glue and adhesives, and crayon from most surfaces. Tip: try a test area before to make sure you won’t ruin any finishes.

  6. Substitute lemon oil for lemon juice or lemon seasonings to flavor seafood, vegetables, beverages, and desserts. To use Lemon oil in place of the zest of “one” lemon – use 8 to 14 drops of Young Living Lemon essential oil. More on Cooking with Essential Oils.

  7. Combine 2–3 drops with water in a 4oz. spray bottle filled with water to help cleanse and sanitize kitchen and bathroom surfaces.

  8. Soothe or prevent corns, callous, or bunions by rubbing 1-2 drops of Lemon oil on the affected area, morning and evening.*

  9. Fill a bowl with cold water, add 2–3 drops of Lemon oil, and drench fruit and vegetables in the lemon water to extend the shelf life of fresh produce.

  10. Add a drop to your dishwasher before the wash cycle for spot-free dishes.

  11. Lemon has antiseptic-like properties and contains compounds that have been studied for their effects on immune function. According Jean Valnet, M.D., the vaporized [diffused] essence of lemon can kill meningococcus bacteria in 15 minutes, typhoid bacilli in one hour, Staphylococcus aureus in two hours, and Pneumococcus bacteria within three hours. Even a 0.2% solution of Lemon oil can kill diphtheria bacteria in 20 minutes and inactivate tuberculosis bacteria. More on diffusers and diffusing.

  12. Lemon has been shown to have antidepressant effects in research done by Komori, et al.,1995. Diffuse or inhale Lemon oil to receive the benefits of aromatherapy.

  13. Lemon oil may help brighten a pale, dull complexion by removing the dead skin cells. Simply mix a drop with your cleanser to help promote healthier skin tone.

  14. Lemon oil can serve as an effective insect repellent. See recipe for making your own beeswax mosquito candle.

  15. Rub a drop of Lemon oil on a wart morning and night, may help it to disappear.*

Lemon essential oil (which comes from the rind, not the pulp) is one of the best remedies for heartburn, as it causes the stomach to stop excreting digestive acids. Simply add a drop or two of Lemon oil to a small glass of water and drink.** More on AlkaLime, pH and Heartburn.

  32. Relaxing & Rejuvenating Aromatherapy Bath Salt Recipe: 1 drop Grapefruit oil, 1 drop Lemon oil, 1 drop Orange oil, 1 drop Patchouli oil, 3 drops Ylang Ylang or Geranium oil, 1 cup Epsom Salts or Sea Salt. Add to running bath water. Soak for 20 minutes.

Mix ingredients together in a glass bottle (I like to re-use my empty NingXia Red bottles to keep my water and mixes in, they’re nice sturdy bottles). You can make a more watered down version for the kids. More on NingXia Red and Electrolyte Drinks.

  34. Refreshing Bacteria Killing Spray: You’ll need – 32 oz. spray bottle, 8 drops Spearmint oil, 8 drops Lemon oil, 6 drops Lavender oil, 6 drops Thyme oil, 6 drops Rosemary oil, 4 drops Eucalyptus globulus, and water. Fill spray bottle 7/8 of the way with water, add your Young Living essential oils. Shake the mixture well and periodically during use. We also found in our pinterest 25 uses for lemon peels.

HERE ARE 25 MORE THINGS TO DO WITH LEMON PEELS:

as seen in domesticdiy.com/home/25-amazing-uses-for-lemon-peels/

Skin Lightener/Brightener

Lemon is a natural skin lightener because of the citric acid in them which is a bleaching agent. Apply leftover lemon peels to your hands, elbows and heels to refresh and lighten the skin and tighten pores.

Garbage Disposal Deodorizer
Lemon (or orange) peels tossed regularly into the garbage disposal will keep the garbage disposal smelling fresh.

Simmering Stove Top Scents
Add lemon rinds to simmering water along with cloves, cinnamon sticks, and orange peels to make a delightful aroma AND humidify the air.

Ant-Proof Your Kitchen
Scatter small slices of lemon peel along thresholds, windowsills, around door entrances, and near any cracks or holes where ants or pests may be entering. Ants do not like lemon and will not enter your home. Lemons are also effective against roaches and fleas.

Coffee Cup Stain Remover
Put a section of lemon peel into a stained coffee mug and add water. Let it sit for several hours, then wipe with a cloth. Stains should disappear.

Refrigerator Freshness
Cut lemon in half and let it absorb fridge smells.

Tea Kettle/Coffee Pot Cleaner
For mineral deposit build up in your tea kettle, fill the kettle with water, add a handful of thin slices of lemon peel and bring to a boil. Turn off heat and let sit for an hour, drain, and rinse well. For coffee pots, add ice, salt and lemon rinds to the empty pot; swish and swirl for a minute or two, dump, and rinse.

Microwave Cleaner
Add lemon rinds to a microwave-safe bowl filled halfway with water. Cook on high for 5 minutes, allowing the water to boil and the steam to condense inside. Carefully remove the hot bowl and wipe away the mess with a damp towel.

Chrome Polish
Cut through mineral deposits on chrome faucets and other tarnished chrome by rubbing with a squeezed lemon half, rinsing, and lightly buffing with a soft cloth.

Copper, Brass, & Stainless Steel Polish
Brighten copper, brass, or stainless steel by dipping a juiced lemon half in salt (you also use baking soda or cream of tartar for the salt) and rubbing on the affected area. Leave on for 5 minutes. Then rinse in warm water and polish dry.

Stove Top Humidifier
If your home suffers from dry heat in the winter, put lemon peels in a pot of water and simmer on the lowest stove-top setting to humidify and scent the air.

Cutting Board Refesher
The antibacterial properties of lemons make them a good choice for refreshing cutting boards. After disinfecting give the surface a rub with a halved lemon, let sit for a few minutes, and rinse.

Brown Sugar Keeper
Add lemon peel (with pulp removed) to brown sugar to help keep it moist and easy to use.

Lemon Zest
Zest is simply grated peel, and it can be used fresh, dried, or frozen. If you don’t have a zester, use the smallest size of a box grater. To dry zest, spread it on a towel and leave out until dried, then store in a jar. To freeze, use a freezer-safe container. Use zest in salads, marinades, baked goods, grain dishes, etc.

Lemon Twists
Use a vegetable peeler or a knife to cut the peel into long strips, cutting away the white pith which is bitter. These can also be frozen in a freezer-safe container or bag. Great in cocktails, sparkling water, and tap water.

Lemon Extract Powder
Using the zest or twists from above, dry the strips skin-side down on a plate about 3 or 4 days. Put in a blender (or spice grinder) and pulverize into a powder. Use the powdered peel in place of extract or zest in recipes.

Lemon Sugar
Add lemon extract powder (see above) to sugar, or use fresh twists, put them in a jar with sugar and let them infuse the sugar.

Lemon Pepper
Mix lemon extract powder (see above) with freshly cracked pepper.

Candied lemon peel
Candied peels can be eaten plain, or dipped in melted chocolate, used in cake, cookie, candy, or bread recipes.

Lemon Sugar Scrub
Mix 1/2 cup sugar with finely chopped lemon peel and enough olive oil to make a paste. Wet your body in the shower, turn off the water and massage sugar mix all over your skin, rinse. Feel the softness!

Nail Whitener
Whiten fingernails by rubbing with a lemon wedge.

Travel Sickness Cure
Suck on a slice of lemon to help you stop feeling nauseous.

Grater Cleaner
Remove dried food from your grater by rubbing with the pulp side of a cut lemon.

Firelighters
Bake discarded orange or lemon peels until they darken. These create natural, fragrant firelighters.

Trash Can Deodorizer
Throw a few lemon peels in the bottom of the can from time to time to keep it smelling fresh.

Remember…..When Life Gives You Lemons…..Don’t Throw Away The Peels!

Using Plants To Detoxify The Air In Your Home

With all the allergens and pollutants bombarding our respiratory systems continuously,  I thought of investing on and clean air filter.  But, since I like to think of ways to do with best without the price tag, I am now having some of these amazing plants.  These will bring life and freshness into the home as well and purify it from toxins.  Much better than an air filter.  I still think the air filter would be a good idea though, but this is what I can do now.  You don't have to have a green thumb to maintain them too.  Aloe vera, for example, is so durable and resistant that with a little water it will look beautiful.  I always like to have one by my kitchen window sill because when my kids come in with a scrape or cut, there goes a little of aloe vera gel.

Here are six indoor plants that clean the air in your home chosen by Lori from the Health Extremist:

Several years ago NASA studied houseplants and their ability to purify the air in indoor spaces. They found that certain plants were better at filtering the air and removing volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) than others.

Why Indoor Plants that Clean the Air Improve Health?
Not only are indoor plants beneficial for increasing oxygen levels in our homes, they have also been found to reduce the toxins in the air we are breathing.

The air in our homes has been shown to contain harmful toxins which ultimately end up in our bodies. Whether the toxins are from building materials, paint, out-gassing carpets, dust, or flame retardants, the levels of these toxins in the air can be reduced.

These plants can reduce many air pollutants including formaldehyde, microbial pathogens, benzene and microbial pathogens.

How Many Should You Have in Your Home
According to NASA it is recommended that you have about 15 to 18 of these plants in your home (this was recommended for a 1800 sq foot home). Remember to also place at least one plant in your bedroom, preferably more.

Even if you don’t have a green thumb, these indoor plants that clean the air are very easy to take care for and require little work.

6 Indoor Plants that Clean the Air:
These plants are the most beneficial for improving indoor air quality. You should be able to find all of these plants locally.

aloe1. Aloe

Aloe plants are very beneficial for increasing oxygen levels in your home. They have also been found to absorb formaldehyde, carbon dioxide, and carbon monoxide. According to Earthship, one pot of aloe is equivalent to nine biological air cleaners.

spider2. Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

Spider plants are able to perform photosynthesis under minimal lighting. They aid in absorbing toxins in the air including formaldehyde, styrene, carbon monoxide, and benzene. One spider plant is able to effectively filter a room of 200 square feet.

ivy3. English Ivy (Hedera helix)

English ivy is another great indoor plant that removes toxins. This plant has been shown to reduce 60% of airborne mold and 58% of airborne feces after being placed in a room for only 6 hours!

lily4. Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum ’Mauna Loa’)

Having a peace lily in your home greatly reduces the chemical toxins in the air. Peace lily plants filter out harmful benzene, trichloroethylene, and formaldehyde.

snake5. Snake Plant or mother-in-law’s tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata‘Laurentii’)

This indoor plant that cleans the air is just about indestructible, if your looking to start out with easy to care for plant, this would be the one to choose. Snake plants aid in removing toxins from the air and require little to no lighting.

FPD_Rubber-Plant6. Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica)

Rubber plants excel at removing toxins from the air, particularly formaldehyde. These plants require minimal lighting and also easy to care for. Note: the leaves can be toxic, so if you have any pets in your home, be careful.

Want More Variety?
NASA also listed the following plants as beneficial for improving the indoor air quality in homes. These plants may be more difficult to find locally, but if you come across any of these plants, be sure to pick one up!

-Golden pothos or Devil’s ivy (Scindapsus aures or Epipremnum aureum)
-Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema modestum)
-Bamboo palm or reed palm (Chamaedorea sefritzii)
-Heartleaf philodendron (Philodendron oxycardium, syn.Philodendron cordatum)
-Selloum philodendron (Philodendron bipinnatifidum, syn.Philodendron selloum)
-Elephant ear philodendron (Philodendron domesticum)
-Red-edged dracaena (Dracaena marginata)
-Cornstalk dracaena (Dracaena fragrans Massangeana)
-Janet Craig dracaena (Dracaena deremensis Janet Craig
-Warneck dracaena (Dreacaena dermenisis Waneckii)
-Weeping fig (Ficus benjamina)

Emergency Preparedness: Water Purification

When it comes to planning Emergency situations, water is at the top of our list.  Where do I get water from when I ran out of clean water?  How do I haul all that water?  Where and how do I store water?  How much?  When?

I have searched for some possible solutions considering the crisis of the emergency.  If we have to evacuate, our 5 gallon jugs that we have stored would not go with us.  I would most likely grab my baby to run than a 5 gallon jug of water.  If it is not an evacuation emergency but instead we have a shortage of water, then the options are different.  Also, we are preparing for a nuclear contamination in our water, so I had researched some good options that are of course cost effective.

Now we are looking at how third world country people live.

Using Gravity Water Filter in India

For evacuation emergencies:

31k3elX+yrL

1.  We have in our back pack that is ready to grab and go at any time.  This is assuming there is no water shortage just contamination or water from a river or creek.

Seychelle Water Straw Radiological Nuclear Radiation Water Filter 25 Gal, that Removes 100% of Major Nuclear Contaminants from Drinking Water.  They also have water bottles and pitchers.  We also have the pitcher to also grab and go.  See other water purification products here

2.  If the situation is no water and dirty water, then these satches will come in handy.

3.  Because of shortage of water, I recommend mineral drops and alkaline drops to really hydrate the body with even little water.

4. Iodine tablets or liquid iodine can purify water.  These have expiration dates.  There are also iodine crystals that have an indefinite shelf life.

For Home water purification emergency:

1. We have two options right now: The gravity ceramic filtration system and the Seychelle pitcher or the britta filter pitcher.  I prefer the seychelle brand because it filters nuclear contaminants.  The Gravity ceramic filter is great because it is least expensive and doesn't require electricity and it filters out 100% of Giardia, E. Coli, and many more harmful substances.

Low Cost Gravity Water Filter

2.  Boil or pasteurize your water.  Boiling water kills all the pathogens (germs in the water.  You can also use a solar oven or rocks to boil water.stones2and learn how here. Fuel will be too precious to burn it to purify water.

3.  Chlorine: For less than $20 you can store a year’s supply of chlorine that will purify your water. But you MUST use caution when you’re storing and using it.  That is why I don't like this option, but I have a quart bottle hidden somewhere, if worse comes to worse, this is my last resort.

For Water Shortage Emergency:

1.  We have 5 gallon jugs filled with water.  But the question is for how long will we need water?

2. Identify a running river, or creek and use the Gravity filter to filter the water.

What are your water purification / storage plan for emergencies?  I would like to hear more ideas.

Movie Documentary Everyone Should See: Food Inc.

I like this documentary because it uncovers the truth about what is going on with our food supply.   A few things I identified are:

  1. Food Monopoly means greed, love of money

  2. Fast paced lifestyle is a fast/junk food lifestyle

  3. Less mothers preparing from scratch nutrient dense food for their families

  4. Other things are more important than taking care of our bodies.  We regret to spend more on nutritious food.

  5. More people spend more money on pharmaceuticals than on nutrition

  6. Injustice in the food industry,  mistreating of workers

  7. Food has become deathly

  8. People have become food engineer's lab rats

  9. Proud of Joel Salitin: A pioneer in respectable godly farming

One think I ask:  What relationship has light with darkness?  The Bible says to eat and drink for the glory of God.  What glory is there in consuming unhealthy food and supporting unjust greedy companies?

Watch the movie and post your feedback:

Baby-Led Introduction To Solids

This is a good article on starting babies on solid foods.  I don't like the idea of "baby-led" because it makes it seem like baby is in control.  But in reality, you are in control.  You decide when baby is ready to start and you decide, pick and choose baby's food.  Baby in control, in my experience and opinion, is dangerous.

**This post has been entered in “Works for me Wednesdays” at We are THAT Family!**

When it comes to solid food, all babies start eating it eventually. The typical wisdom (of late) has been to start baby on rice cereal at 4 – 6 months, the follow up with vegetables, then fruits, and later, dairy and meats. There have been different ideas through the years (including starting babies on rice cereal as early as 2 weeks old!), but one thing all these “plans” have in common are that babies are spoon-fed their early meals.

Not so in baby-led solids.

Baby-led solids is a relatively new idea. Babies are never fed from a spoon or offered any type of purees. They are also rarely offered grains as a first food, but instead are given ripe, raw fruits and vegetables, cheese, or even bits of meat. The food is placed on a tray in front of them, and the baby is encouraged to do what he will with it — play with it, smash it, lick it, and eat it. If he chooses not to eat, that’s okay.

Babies obviously have to be a bit older before they start solids for this to work. Most babies are more in the range of 6 to 8 months, and some are even older before they’ll actually eat anything this way. The idea is that if the baby refuses to eat at all, or refuses a particular food, he must not be ready for it. If he DOES choose to eat something, he must be ready for it and he clearly wants it. This gives the baby all the control over what and how much he eats. Since the baby has (hopefully) had demand-feeding up until now, he has always had control over how much he eats (and when), and he has self-regulated well. With baby-led solids, he can continue to self-regulate his eating.

We will be doing baby-led solids with Daniel. He is about 5.5 months at this time, so too young (although he does try to grab our food sometimes!). We’re hoping to hold off until 8 months. This is especially important to us because of the history of food allergies. We are hoping that he will not eat things that do not make him feel good (sometimes, kids with allergies will refuse all foods until they are over a year, or certain foods, because they seem to know it is not good for them).

So, WHY would anyone do this? And what should you feed first?

Kelly Mom has a good chart and FAQ on starting solids. She recommends no earlier than 6 months, and cautions that solids DO NOT REPLACE BREASTMILK (or formula)! Solids are only for tasting and experimenting until around age 1. (Side note: Kelly mom says that babies who start solids earlier and eat more of them tend to wean earlier, too. If you have already started your baby on solids before 6 months and s/he is eating a fair amount, and you had hoped to breastfeed for quite awhile yet, don’t worry! We started Bekah at 4 months and she ate a lot of solids, too, and she is still an avid nurser at 23 months. So, whatever “mistakes” you make, you can fix or overcome!)

La Leche League weighs in on baby-led solids, too (frequently called “baby led weaning;” I don’t like this term because it implies that you are putting the baby from breastmilk onto solids, and this shouldn’t be true — baby should continue to breastfeed while adding complementary foods).

It’s important to know how a baby’s gut develops. (Click the link for indepth information. It also thoroughly explains the “leaky gut syndrome” I mentioned in a previous post.) If a baby is exclusively breastfed from birth (no supplementation at all), his or her gut will close and begin to mature around 18 weeks. Solids should never be started earlier than this. In babies who are formula fed or who have been supplemented with formula on occasion, it takes even longer for the gut to mature. Using probiotics can help, although breastfeeding is best. The reason that solid foods can’t be started until the gut has closed and matured is that until this time, large, undigested proteins can get from the intestines into the bloodstream, where the body can begin to attack them as foreign invaders, creating an allergic reactions. When the gut is mature, proteins don’t pass into the bloodstream until fully digested, and therefore don’t create allergic reactions (this is why special formulas have pre-digested proteins or even basic amino acids, in an attempt to bypass this issue and cause no allergic reactions).

However, age isn’t the only thing to look for when starting solids. The calendar is a good start — as in, don’t start sooner than 6 months of age, unless advised for real medical reasons (a lot of doctors will say “sure, 4 months is fine!” but not have any particular reason why your child NEEDS solids so early; I would not consider this a medical reason). But also look for:

*Doubled birth weight
*Ability to sit unassisted
*Development of the “pincer grasp”
*Interest in food (watching you eat, grabbing your food)
*Loss of the tongue-thrust reflex

If your baby doesn’t have ALL of these, he’s not ready for solids. Solids, contrary to popular belief, will not help a babysleep through the night (there is controversy regarding babies with reflux, but my personal belief is that reflux is usually caused by allergies, or immature digestive system, and neither is fixed by feeding unnecessary food, or drugs). It is important to note that breastmilk contains 22 – 35 calories/ounce, and formula contains about 22 calories/ounce. Early solids will typically contain 5 – 10 calories/ounce, and should make up a very sparing part of the child’s diet. Put this way, it’s obvious that breastmilk is the fattiest and most filling food, and that solids will not “fill the child up” and help him/her to sleep longer.

Once a baby IS ready, though, here are some good first foods:

*Avocado
*Squash
*Sweet potatoes
*Chicken (cut in very tiny pieces, to avoid choking)
*Cooked apples (cut in very tiny pieces)
*Cooked pears
*Egg yolks (no whites)

You will notice that no type of grains are on this list. This is because grains are not good for young babies. The Weston A. Price Foundation recommends that no grains be introduced until around age 2 because babies have a very hard time digesting grains. They actually recommend that animal products (egg yolks, then liver, then other meats and butter) bebaby’s first foods, starting fruits and vegetables only after 10 months. Babies don’t handle “roughage” well as adults do, because they don’t produce much amylase, an enzyme required to digest grains and other roughage.

Introduce foods only one at a time, no more often than every three days. It can take awhile for reactions to show up, so iffoods are introduced too quickly, it can be hard to tell which is causing a reaction. In children with a family history of allergies (especially siblings), waiting a week between new foods is a good idea. Reactions may include the following:

*Diarrhea
*Vomitting (especially projectile)
*Constipation
*Hives
*Trouble breathing/anaphylaxis
*Eczema
*Night waking
*Screaming
*Belly pain/upset/gas
*Cradle cap

Please be aware that eczema flare-ups ARE a sign of allergy and are NOT normal (Bekah’s eczema ONLY flares up when she’s eaten a food she’s allergic to, and her doctor has indicated this is a sign to watch for). Please also be aware that some of these symptoms can be a sign that the baby is simply not ready for the food and NOT an allergy, but it still means you must wait awhile before trying it agai
n. It is a good idea to introduce filtered water and a good probiotic at the same time as you introduce solids to hopefully minimize any reactions (per Bekah’s doctors).

A lot of babies experience severe constipation when rice cereal is introduced first — Bekah did. They actually cry and strain. This is not normal, and is a sign that their bodies are not ready to digest grains. Many parents are told this IS normal and are advised to give their babies juice, or worse, medical suppositories. The best answer is to stop feeding grains and start with other foods, or simply wait longer to feed foods at all. Remember: babies are NOT supposed to be getting a large portion of their calories from their food yet. They are only tasting and learning about new textures, experimenting.

When introducing a food, cut up a small bit of it into tiny pieces and place them on a highchair tray. Sit the baby in the highchair, and encourage him/her to play with, lick, and eat the food. If s/he is not interested, don’t push him/her to try it. Just wait a couple days and try again. Always watch your child carefully when s/he is eating, especially in the first few months. If the baby indicates s/he likes the food and wants more (baby sign is really great for this), or wants some help, go ahead and help. This is BABY LED, but that doesn’t mean you can’t help if the baby would like you to.

Once you have introduced several foods, you can start to put more than one on the tray at once, or serve some of the family’s meal to the baby (for example: egg yolks cooked with some meat). Introducing butter and coconut oil early on is a good idea, too, because both provide the needed saturated fat and cholesterol to the baby ( coconut oil is cholesterol-free but does contain the medium-chain fatty acids found, besides coconut, only in mother’s milk). The Weston A. Price Foundation has lots of good ideas on feeding babies (linked above).

In case you find this article a bit strange and lest you think I feel like I’m a “perfect parent” for doing things this way (as it’s been brought to my attention that sometimes I come off that way when I don’t mean to), let me tell you about my experience feeding Bekah. She was given formula supplements from birth to 6 weeks, then exclusively breastfed until 4 months. She was started on rice cereal just prior to reaching 18 weeks. I did this because she had stopped sleeping well at night at 3 months (although she was STILL only waking once per night, which, believe me, is a whole lot better than Daniel’s doing now at almost 5.5 months) and I felt like she needed “more” and it would help her sleep through the night (it didn’t. She only starting sleeping through the night “most of the time” at 22 months). Within a week we were trying pears, peas, bananas, apples, carrots, and various other foods. We didn’t wait more than 2 or 3 days in between foods, and I didn’t note any allergic reactions as such (horrible constipation from the rice cereal, followed by diarrhea and night waking from peas, which we now know she is allergic to). By 6 months I kind of was trying to hold back, but also sort of letting her eat “whatever.” I spoonfed her everything, and made purees for her. I usually fed her either a puree of fruit or vegetable (broccoli was another common one early on) for her meals, or I fed her over-cooked, mushy, cut up fruit or vegetables. When I didn’t have any around (I never bought any jars), I would feed her whatever was around — pastacoated in canned tomato soup, cream or cheese soups, even Taco Bell cheese roll-ups once or twice. I loved that she’d eat anything. At 8 months or so I’d give her “whatever” half the time, and sweet potatoes mixed with brown rice for dinner. That stopped at 11 months after she got the stomach flu and refused to eat it anymore. Right around her birthday, she stopped eating anything except apples, bananas, bread, cheese, and potatoes, when previously she’d eaten anything. Just after this we started discovering all her allergies…and since then we’ve been on a roller coaster ride of trying to heal her, get her to try new foods, etc. etc. She is FINALLY willing to at least try most foods now, and is sleeping through the night…most of the time (she is 23 months). There were months and months where we just had to feed her more applesauce, or another slice of bread, because she literally would not eat anything else. It was very frustrating. Anyway — we’re trying really hard to avoid that with Daniel, so I’ve done all this research on how we can do a better job feeding him so that (hopefully) it doesn’t happen again. Knock on wood.

How To Start Baby On Solid Food Safely

With the rise of food allergies on babies, it is important to understand why and how to introduce our babies to eating solid food?  Babies are started on solids far too early now days.  It was not so in past generations.  Some have even told me how they let their baby eat at three months.  This is one of the reason for many baby sicknesses and disorders like eczema, constipation, food allergy and digestive disorders and others.  Babies's stomachs are not developed enough to digest most foods until after one year old.  Even then, stomachs continue to mature so they can't fully digest many vegetables until 5 years old.  So, Mom, relax if your toddler doesn't like vegetables.  If he is over one year old, continue faithfully to offer cooked vegetables but never force them on your child.  You enjoy them as to encourage him to try them.  It will take about 15 tastes before they develop taste buds for it.  It is a battle not worth fighting in contention.

Ok, back to baby food.  Process foods have been outlawed in our home, at least by me.  The law is broken once in awhile though.  How could highly processed rice cereal be the first food I give my baby?  To be clear, babies don't need any other nutrient from solid food than breastmilk (or formula).   What you can do is introduce them to the concept of solids, different textures and tastes, and eating skills.  You can do this when baby seems ready, usually wanting to grab the food you are eating and when they have developed pincer fingering- picking up small objects.  Nothing should be given to babies before 6 months.  My ideal would be after one year.

My experiences:

My second daughter, Destiny, didn't eat until one year old.   She did great.  I didn't have to worry about food allergies.  She was ready, her stomach was moredeveloped and has been a healthy girl.

destuny

Danielle, my first one, tried out pureed carrots at 6 months.  She flared up with eczema in her face.  I stopped the food and kept her on breast milk.  After a year she resumed solid food with no problem.  She breastfed until she was 3 and a half years old.

Noah, however, would want to eat at 7 months.  That's when he showed signs of ready to start leaning to eat.  But I was so careless to let him grab pieces of bread.  This severely constipated him.  For two months he suffered from constipation.  I eliminated grains and only allowed him to try soluble fiber foods like fruit.  Drinking an herbal tea also helped him.  I had a hard time keeping him away from food.  To this point, this little boy loves to eat.  But since he was 9 months old, no more constipation.  After a year old, he was fine eating everything.  But I was always cautious on the bread.

Then Liberty here started taking food in at nine months.  At 8 months I would give her the carrot, celery, cucumber and apple sticks for her to grab and play with, not eat.  That is all they need when we sit at the table and they want to eat.  They will be content.  But at nine months, she wanted more.  So slowly I gave her some food.

destHere is a list of good foods to start with:

Avocado

egg yolk (cooked, not the white)

blueberries

chicken stock

cooked vegetables

cooked apples, pear, peach

cheese

yogurt

Bananas can be constipating and create mucus, so I stay away from them until one year old.

Of course, you will introduce one at a time.  Remember, taste buds are being developed.  Try to keep the food simple without sugar and salt.

Overall, keep it simple.  Food introduction before 1 year is only for taste and learning how to eat, not for nutrition.  Breast milk is all they need at this time.  After a year, baby can eat pretty much everything.  But be cautious with anything that would upset him.  Keep vegetables cooked.

What are some ways you start your baby on solids?  What are some experiences you have had with your babies?

Homemade Cough / Cold Remedies For Children

A mother is many things.  Among one of the most important is a nurse.  Sicknesses are inevitable with children.  I am thankful for the opportunity to nurse our children to health.  They need extra doses of love and tender care that only a mother's touch can give.  My children want me close by when they are sick.  They feel vulnerable and need the reassurance that everything is going to be fine.

I will be sharing various quick, easy remedies I have used with my children.  Here is one I use for cough and colds.

You will need:

1 Cup raw honey (local honey is best)

1 cup lemon juice

1 purple onion

1 head of garlic (not one clove)

2 purple radishes (optional)

Instructions:image

Blend all together in a blender.  Store in a glass container in the refrigerator.  Administer one spoonful 3-4 times a day for at least 3 days.   Depending on the coughing, you can give it more frequent.

This remedy anti viral, anti bacterial and boosts the immune system.  As a matter of fact, it is good to always take it, even if they are not sick.  Try it, it is not bad, my children like it!

IMG_7320

  • In addition to this cough syrup, I give them our homemade Elderberry Tincture.

  • If I see an infection, like green mucus coming out, I add a homemade echinacea goldenseal tincture formula.

  • I sprinkle kelp (children's pepper as we call it) and powdered rosehips (children's cayenne) on their meals for vitamin C.

  • Chicken soup, bone broths are excellent too for congestion.

  • In the night, I rub their chests, backs and sole of their feet with a homemade vapor rub and put socks on for the night.

  • I keep an aroma diffuser and humidifier with lavender and/or eucalyptus oil.

  • Calming baths with epsom salts, for aches.

  • Herbal teas like chamonmille, peppermint and spearmint are great too.  In the morning I like to have cinnamon tea.

  • A garlic lemonade to sip through the day too.

  • Don't forget the cod liver oil and coconut oil.

  • And their regular homemade multivitamin and mineral tincture.

  • Remember the most important ingredient is lots of Mommy love.

What are some remedies you do for your children when they are sick with cough or colds?

Epsom Salt Healthy Uses In The Home

Since I rediscover Epson Salt, it is a favorite around our home.   Here are some of the favorite ways to use it by wellness mama.  I am ordering a 50 lb sack because it is less than 50% cheaper than keep buying the small boxes.  I am also thinking preparedness.

  1. As a relaxing Magnesium Bath Soak – Add at least 1 cup of epsom salt to a warm bath and soak for 20 minutes.

  2. Splinter Removal- Soak in concentrated epsom salt water to pull out a splinter.

  3. Magnesium Foot Scrub- Make a homemade magnesium scrub (recipe here) for a boost of magnesium and super soft skin.

  4. Better Vegetables- Add a tablespoon of epsom salt to the soil below a tomato plant to boost growth.

  5. Facial Wash- Add a pinch of epsom salt to your usual face cleaner (or to your oil cleansing routine) for a skin exfoliating magnesium boost.

  6. Tile/Grout Cleaner- Mix equal parts of liquid dish soap and epsom salts and use to scrub tile and grout. Rinse well for a streak free shine.

  7. Body Aches- Add 2 cups of epsom salt to a warm bath and soak for at least 20 minutes to help relieve muscle sprains and for a transdermal magnesium boost.

  8. Homemade Sea Salt Spray- Make your own sea salt spray to add texture and volume to hair- recipe here.

  9. Water House Plants- Help house plants grow by adding a couple tablespoons of epsom salt to the water when you water them.

  10. Volumizing Hair Mask- Combine equal parts of conditioner and epsom salt and leave on hair for 20 minutes. Rinse well and let air dry for thicker hair.

  11. Foot Soak- For a concentrated magnesium boost, add 1 cup of epsom salt to a hot foot soak and soak for 20 minutes.

  12. Get rid of slugs- Have slugs in your garden or on your patio? Sprinkle epsom salt to deter them.

  13. Making Magnesium Lotion- Using magnesium flakes is a better option, but in a pinch, you can use epsom salt to make homemade magnesium oil (recipe here).

  14. Laxative- For occasional constipation, a teaspoon of epsom salt dissolved in water can help. Check with a doctor first.

  15. Beautiful Roses- Add a tablespoon a week to the soil around rose bushes before watering for faster growth.

  16. Soil Prep- Before planting, we add a few bags of epsom salt to the soil in the garden and water in to help replenish soil magnesium levels.

  17. Headache relief- There is evidence that soaking in a soothing epsom salt bath may help relieve headache.

  18. Smooth skin- Mix 1/2 cup epsom salt with 1/4 cup olive oil and scrub skin in the shower for healthy and smooth skin.

  19. Itchy Skin or Bug Bites- Dissolve a tablespoon of epsom salt in to 1/2 cup of water and cool. Spritz on itchy skin or apply a wet compress to help relieve itching.

  20. Minor Sunburn Relief- Use the same ratio in the itchy skin relief above and spritz on to minor sunburns to help soothe them.

  21. Help Kids Sleep Better- Add a cup to kids’ bath water before bed to help them sleep peacefully..

Recipes For Yummy Broccoli For Baby And The Whole Family

Learn all about Broccoli

Broccoli is such a super food, highest in vitamin C that I wanted to find out ways that we can ALL eat it, including baby.  Liberty is not eating food yet.  I like to wait a year before feeding babies.  Before that, they would start getting used to tastes and learning how to swallow food.  But this introduction is not really for nutrition.  After a year or so, the digestion system will be better developed and baby can digest almost any food. Many allergies to food are because babies are fed way too early.

When can Baby eat Broccoli?

Anytime after a year.  Broccoli is from the coniferous vegetable family which also means that it's hard for the stomach to break it down.  That is why it should always be eaten lightly steamed.  For baby, really soft and smashed or sauteed in olive oil

The Goodness of Broccoli for Babies

This year we are growing lots of broccoli in our garden so we will be cooking it a lot. Broccoli is very high in Vitamin C and is a great source of soluble fiber. This makes broccoli wonderful to add to baby food recipes. Soluble fiber is the fiber that helps loosen up the bowels as it changes its form as it passes through the digestive tract. An overabundance of soluble fiber in a diet may produce diarrhea. Insoluble fiber does not change its form or make up and simply helps to add bulk and too much of it may cause constipation.

Here are some great recipes for the whole family:

Broccoli Casserole

2 cups brown rice cooked

(If using brown rice, be sure to soak it in acidic water with starter for 24 hours.  Basmati white rice would be my first choice after brown as it is lighter to digest and best than other white rice)

2 tablespoons butter

1/2 cup diced onion

1/2 cup chopped green peppers

1/2 cup chopped celery

2 cups shredded raw cheddar cheese, divided

2 pkgs. Organic Frozen broccoli (10 oz. each)

1 cup of yogurt

1 cup of heavy whipping cream or half and half

2 cups of homemade stockbroccoliricecasserole

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350F degrees

Sauté onion, peppers, and celery in butter until tender. Combine rice, broccoli, sautéed vegetables, 1 cup Cheddar cheese, and soups/substitutions. Transfer to a greased casserole dish.

Cover and bake at 350° for 30 minutes, or until hot and bubbly.

Take off cover, top with remaining 1 cup Cheddar cheese, and bake about 5 minutes longer, until top is lightly browned and cheese is melted.

Baby's Creamy Broccoli Soup

2 teaspoons olive oil

1 small onion, chopped

1 package (10 ounces) frozen broccoli

1 1/2 cups chicken stock

1/4 teaspoon marjoram or oregano

Pinch cayenne pepper (optional)

1 cup heavy whipping cream  or raw milk

 Instructions:

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat; add onion and sauté until tender. Add broccoli, chicken stock, marjoram, and cayenne; bring to a boil over medium-high heat.

Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until broccoli is tender. Remove from heat and stir in milk. Purée in batches in a blender. Heat through to serve.

Cheesy Broccoli (or Cauliflower) Rice

1 stalk of broccoli

½ cup cooked brown rice

¼ shredded cheddar cheese

 Instructions:

1. Wash broccoli under cool water.

2. Chop stems and florets into small pieces; using just the florets will many times yield a smoother puree. Steam until tender.

3. Mix the rice and broccoli together and return to the stove on low

4. Stir in the cheese until it has melted into the broccoli & rice

5. Puree or mash as needed

Broccoli & Carrots

1 stalk of broccoli

1 cup peeled and thinly diced carrots

baby-led-solids-broccoli

1. Wash broccoli under cool water.

2. Chop broccoli stems and florets into small pieces (using just the florets will many times yield a smoother puree)

3. Add broccoli and carrots to a saucepan (2 inches of water) or steamer and steam until tender.

4. Mash or puree as needed. If the veggies are diced small enough, this will make a wonderful and colorful finger food medley.

Broccoli & Cheddar Cheese Nuggets

1 16-oz Package frozen broccoli, cooked, drained, and chopped

1 cup seasoned bread crumbs

1 ½ cups shredded raw cheddar cheese

3 Large eggs (given baby is over a year old).  I would recommend that you substitute 5 egg yolks for the whole eggs if serving this to those under 1 yr.

Instructions:broccolinuggets

Pre-Heat oven to 375

Lightly coat a baking sheet with butter and set aside.

Combine all remaining ingredients and mix well. *Add seasonings if you like - garlic powder, pepper, extra basil & oregano for example. Add a fruit or veggie puree to substitute for the eggs if desired.

Shape mixture into nuggets or fun shapes such as squares or squigglies etc..and place on baking tray. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, turn nuggets over after 15 minutes.

Serve warm - Chop or mash these broccoli nuggets if your baby isn't able to handle bigger finger foods.

Broccoli Nuggets II

16 oz package of frozen broccoli (florets if possible.)

Allergy Season Symptoms, ChemTrails And Detox for Children

This year allergy symptoms hit even my little ones.

Unprecedented in my family, thus, we began to find out why everyone around us came down with the same symptoms.

Symptoms of allergy season include:

  • Runny nose

  • Watery, red eyes

  • Wheezing

  • Coughing

  • Sneezing

  • Drainage

  • And all around feeling miserable.

  • Tightness in the chest with difficulty breathing

allergic-rhinitisThis was several people we talked to in the same area.  Well, it was hard not to notice that there were at least 10 ChemTrail planes flying over our region for the last two weeks trying to control weather and bring rain.  Rain did come but at what cost.   This Chem Trail is a huge subject for another post.  I won't attempt to explain it here.  In the meantime,  we concluded that this "seasonal allergy" is also due to the pollutants in the air that are sprayed by these planes since this is also the season they focus on spraying.  They heavily saturate the air with aluminum, aerosol and others.  What do we do?

  1. Try to stay indoors as much as possible

  2. Purify the air inside your home by having an air purifier or, like  us, get a big fan and attach a good allergen filter to it.  In addition spray vinegar water all around and leave bowls with vinegar around your house.  This will neutralize acidic air and kill germs in the air as vinegar evaporates.

  3. Detox.  It is always a great idea to detox at least once a year.

Our world is very different that it was 100 years ago.  Our children deal with so many toxins around the environment, food, water, products that it is impossible to get away from them.   This year I am trying these.

 Detox ways for Children:

  1. Combining a mild laxative (such as aloe, prune juice, or fennel seeds) with a bulking agent (such as psyllium fiber for short-term use or ground flax seeds for a long-term solution).

  2. A safe liver support agent is milk thistle, an amazing liver-healing herb. Use a high-quality product and give your child the recommended dose for one to three months once a year.

  3. Drink a lot of purified water with lemon drops.

  4. Move around to stimulate the lymphatic circulation and drainage.  A 20-minute walk every day to break a light sweat for about 40 minutes, 3—4 times per week.

  5. Supplement with a good quality Multivitamin and a green foods powder.

  6. Avoid bad foods-- I am guessing you know what these are.  Right, refined flours, sugars, hydrogenated oils, corn syrup...

  7. Eat raw fruits and vegetables and greens every day.

Immune System Boosters For Children:

  1. A blend of purple onion, garlic, lemon and raw honey.  Take one teaspoon a day or more as needed.   Also, elderberry tincture

  2. Echenesia and goldenseal tincture for flu like symtoms only.

  3. Cinnamon Sticks tea.  A great one to serve in breakfast, sweeten with stevia or raw honey.  A great tasting tea.

  4.  Enjoy local raw honey and cinnamon powder.  Serve it over toast, muffins.

  5. Combine herbs like rosemary, sage -good for coughing-, nettle, garlic, lemon, ginger, choose any combination you like with local raw honey.   Combine the herbs in a jar with the honey and leave it for 2-3 weeks.

Remember that honey is not for babies under 1 year old.

Remineralizing Homemade Toothpaste Recipe For Children

How to Remineralize Teeth Naturally- Part 1

What if I told you that my mother, in 32 years, never took great care of her teeth and never flossed.  Yet, she was 40 years old and had perfect teeth and no cavities.  How did she do it?  I asked her about it.   She said that her mother, my grandmother, never took care of her children's teeth.  And consequently, neither did my mother insisted on oral hygiene to her kids--yeah, that means my siblings and I.  She never brushed our teeth and we never learned the discipline.  Obviously, she didn't see it as important.  She is a very clean woman, but  as she puts it, "I was never so insistent or religious about brushing your teeth as children, as I see you and your sister are with your kids."

I confess that I never flossed my teeth until I was about 25 years old!  I didn't even know what flossing was!  I started brushing my teeth when I was about 13 years old.  My brushing was also a quick once a day brush.  On top of that I never went to the dentist until I was 25.  I made an appointment because I got married and I first learned about this thing called "dental insurance" that my dear husband informed me about that we had.  I still thought that you would use the dental insurance only if you had problems with your teeth.  But at my first visit, they told me to come back in six months.  "What for", I asked, "you said I have very healthy teeth?"

"To keep healthy clean teeth you need to come back every six months for the rest of your life," explained the dentist.

"Oh, OK"  I scheduled my next appointment.

Within a year I had my first cavity, at 26 years old.  Remember that I had never really taken care of my teeth or visited a dentist in my life.  The dentist was amazed at my teeth the first visit.  She asked me what I did, since that was my first visit ever.  I, too was surprised by her question.  "What do you mean, what do I do?  Nothing, " I simply shrugged.

Now, also my mother suffers from tooth decay.  What changed?  Diet.  My mother was raised in a ranch eating whole foods, drinking lots of raw milk, cream, butter, soft cheeses and the like.  Of course, all her food was homemade.  When she married, unfortunately, my father insisted on her drinking pasteurized milk, but she hated it.  Then, she immigrated to the United States at age 32 and I was 11 years old.   The good reserves of vitamins, minerals wore off as the intake greatly decreased.

Recently, my husband had a bad tooth that had been hurting.  He began drinking raw milk and taking some cod liver oil.  He didn't do it diligently but in a few months, the tooth began to heal.  The pain went away.  I had heard of people healing tooth decay naturally.  So we began to lean about it because we had a 5 year old who had two cavities.  I had tried to brush her teeth daily;  never ate candy and ate pretty healthy.  What happened?   Then,  we read the book by Dr. Ramiel Nagel, Cure Tooth Decay.  I discovered that our diet was very deficient of vital nutrients by omitting important foods from our diet like certain oils, raw dairy products and calcium rich foods.

In his book, Dr. Nagel points out Dr. Price's research of the indigenous people around the world who had perfect teeth.  How did they do it?  Just like in my family's, the answer was in their diet.  After much research and study, doctors found out that these groups of people around the world had these three components in their diet that the western diet lacks:

  • The presence of enough minerals in the diet.

  • The presence of enough fat soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) in the diet.

  • How bio-available these nutrients are and how well the body is absorbing them. They found that this is largely influenced by the presence of Phytic Acid in the diet.

The conclusion was that by optimizing these minerals and vitamins and controlling the intake of Phytic Acid, which is largely present in grains, seeds, legumes, and nuts, that the body would be able to reverse cavities by remineralizing the teeth.   I thought this made sense.  But just in case not everyone agrees, I want to disclose that I am not a dentist, nor am I telling anyone not to visit your dentist for your regular teeth cleaning.  In fact, there are many dentists out there who are now teaching their clients how to remineralize their teeth
I also learned that pasteurized milk will actually leach calcium from your bones in great amounts!  We could never drink pasteurized milk due to allergic reactions.  But, we had no allergic reactions to raw milk.  In case you are wondering why anyone would want to drink raw milk, you can learn about it here.

More on a healthy diet to heal tooth decay in our next post  This post is supposed to be on a toothpaste recipe that our Little Homemakers In Training put together.  So, without further due, here you go.

Diet To Heal Tooth Decay

As promised, here is the diet you would need to follow to begin to remineralize your teeth and cure tooth decay.  Again, I am not a dentist, I am just sharing with you my family's experience and what I have learned through my research.  Since it makes sense, why not give it a try.  I would love to hear any before and after stories.

This diet is explained in detail in the book Cure Tooth Decay

  1.  Cut grains, beans, seeds and nuts as much as possible.

  2. Limit all sugars, including high sugar fruits and starchy vegetables.  Eat mineral rich vegetables.

  3. Indulge in healthy fats like coconut oil and grass fed butter. Dr. Nagel recommends all kinds of fats, that in my opinion are not good because God says not to eat them like lard, tallow, goat and sheep fat.

  4. Try to drink a cup of bone broth everyday or as much as possible.

  5. Take cod liver oil with butter oil

  6. Take vitamin D

  7. Take about 1/4 cup of unrefined virgin coconut oil a day

  8. For Oral cleaning:  Make some remineralizing toothpaste, and if you can get some Oral Wellness Brushing Blend, I highly recommend it.

It is up to you how long you want to do this diet for.  But I would suggest that in between dentist visits so he can testify of any change in your oral health.

Here is a site you may want to visit for more information of oral health:

I read this interesting article that showed the importance of vitamin D in our diet and I would agree as a supplement if you want to reverse tooth decay.  Also, a diet high in phytic acid decreases mineral absorption.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay:
Meet Sir Edward Mellanby, the discoverer of vitamin D. Along with his wife, Dr. May Mellanby, he identified dietary factors that control the formation and repair of teeth and bones. He also identified the cause of rickets (vitamin D deficiency) and the effect of phytic acid on mineral absorption. Truly a great man! This research began in the 1910s and continued through the 1940s.What he discovered about tooth and bone formation is profound, disarmingly simple and largely forgotten. I remember going to the dentist as a child. He told me I had good teeth. I informed him that I tried to eat well and stay away from sweets. He explained to me that I had good teeth because of genetics, not my diet. I was skeptical at the time, but now I realize just how ignorant that man was.Tooth structure is determined during growth. Well-formed teeth are highly resistant to decay while poorly-formed teeth are cavity-prone. Drs. Mellanby demonstrated this by showing a strong correlation between tooth enamel defects and cavities in British children. The following graph is drawn from several studies he compiled in the book Nutrition and Disease (1934). "Hypoplastic" refers to enamel that's poorly formed on a microscopic level.
The graph is confusing, so don't worry if you're having a hard time interpreting it. If you look at the blue bar representing children with well-formed teeth, you can see that 77% of them have no cavities, and only 7.5% have severe cavities (a "3" on the X axis). Looking at the green bar, only 6% of children with the worst enamel structure are without cavities, while 74% have severe cavities. Enamel structure is VERY strongly related to cavity prevalence. What determines enamel structure during growth? Drs. Mellanby identified three dominant factors:

  1. The mineral content of the diet

  2. The fat-soluble vitamin content of the diet, chiefly vitamin D

  3. The availability of minerals for absorption, determined largely by the diet's phytic acid content

Teeth and bones are a mineralized protein scaffold. Vitamin D influences the quality of the protein scaffold that's laid down. For the scaffold to mineralize, the diet has to contain enough minerals, primarily calcium and phosphorus. Vitamin D allows the digestive system to absorb the minerals, but it can only absorb them if they aren't bound by phytic acid. Phytic acid is an anti-nutrient found primarily in unfermented seeds such as grains. So the process depends on getting minerals (sufficient minerals in the diet and low phytic acid) and putting them in the right place (fat-soluble vitamins).

Optimal tooth and bone formation occurs only on a diet that is sufficient in minerals, fat-soluble vitamins, and low in phytic acid. Drs. Mellanby used dogs in their experiments, which it turns out are a good model for tooth formation in humans for a reason I'll explain later. FromNutrition and Disease:
Thus, if growing puppies are given a limited amount of separated [skim] milk together with cereals, lean meat, orange juice, and yeast (i.e., a diet containing sufficient energy value and also sufficient proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins B and C, and salts), defectively formed teeth will result. If some rich source of vitamin D be added, such as cod-liver oil or egg-yolk, the structure of the teeth will be greatly improved, while the addition of oils such as olive... leaves the teeth as badly formed as when the basal diet only is given... If, when the vitamin D intake is deficient, the cereal part of the diet is increased, or if wheat germ [high in phytic acid] replaces white flour, or, again, if oatmeal [high in phytic acid] is substituted for white flour, then the teeth tend to be worse in structure, but if, under these conditions, the calcium intake is increased, then calcification [the deposition of calcium in the teeth] is improved.

Other researchers initially disputed the Mellanbys' results because they weren't able to replicate the findings in rats. It turns out, rats produce the phytic acid-degrading enzyme phytase in their small intestine, so they can extract minerals from unfermented grains better than dogs. Humans also produce phytase, but at levels so low they don't significantly degrade phytic acid. The small intestine of rats has about 30 times the phytase activity of the human small intestine, again demonstrating that humans are not well adapted to eating grains. Our ability to extract minerals from seeds is comparable to that of dogs, which shows that the Mellanbys' results are applicable to humans.

Drs. Mellanby found that the same three factors determine bone quality in dogs as well, which I may discuss in another post.

Is there anything someone with fully formed enamel can do to prevent tooth decay? Drs. Mellanby showed (in humans this time) that not only can tooth decay be prevented by a good diet, it can be almost completely reversed even if it's already present. Dr. Weston Price used a similar method to reverse tooth decay as well.

What is your oral health story?  Would you take the challenge?
